Pineapple Luminary
Raku fired pineapple. Raku is a live firing process using special clay and glaze that can withstand the rapid temperature changes. At 2000° the piece is removed from the kiln using tongs and fire protective gear, then placed in a metal bin with combustible materials where is ignites and is “smoked”. The whole process takes about one hour, and the colors are unique to Raku with metallic and copper sheens. To create, I start by throwing a closed form on the wheel with a tall narrow neck that I open into a v-shape at the top. The leaves and details are added and carved by hand. Once completely carved the holes are created to make a luminary. The form is hollow and the base open for battery candle or electric light. Approximate dimensions H 10” x W 5”. Indoors only.
